Professors can seem intimidating, but most actually want to help. Here’s how to make the convo less awkward.
1. Script It Out
Email example:Hi [Professor], I’ve been struggling with [mental health / personal challenge], and it’s affected my work. Could we set up a time to talk about options?
2. Keep It Short & Honest
You don’t need your full life story—just the facts and what support you’re asking for.
3. Go Early, Not After Finals
Professors have more flexibility if you reach out before deadlines pile up.
Real Talk:
You’re not weak for asking—you’re resourceful. That’s what college is about.
